I am attaching a PDF from the census.gov site with the 2010 data of population by age and sex. Also the library has excellent marketing information of book sales by sex. They can be found under the Demographic Information tab of this Marketing Guide:  http://libguides.unomaha.edu/marketing_demographics.

The first page of this guide has links to databases. I am attaching a marketing report from Mintel on book purchases by age/sex.

Another database that could be helpful is ReferenceUSA. This database has consumer behavior/purchasing detail by age/gender. If you have time, I can show you how to get information by location, lifestyle (book purchasers), age and gender.

Another helpful database is IBISWorld. This can give you information on the book industry, top companies and where the industry is going.
