How would I pose my search criteria for this question? I am looking for juvenile literature to conduct a running record reading assessment for a 12 year old girl. I will need to assess for miscues and also for comprehension. After the running record read she will retell the passage. The passage is only going to be 100 to 150 words in length and that is why I am looking for an article in a magazine or a journal. There must be enough material in the passage to retell. I would like to give her 3 choices from which to select a passage.
We have two databases that have a limiter for the Lexile Reading Levels. If you don't know what Lexile level you need, the Lexile website (www.lexile.com) has a link on their site labelled "don't know your lexile measure?" that can help. I did a quick search for 7th grade and it gave a range of 830L-1090L. Sixth grade was 780L to 1040L.
The two databases are MAS Ultra (designed for high school so would probably work for middle school) and Primary Search (designed for the primary grades and will work if she is a struggling reader). Both are listed on the library's Database A-Z list at http://libguides.unomaha.edu/az.php
The Lexile limiter option is below the search boxes in the "Search Options" area. It is on the left side in Primary Search. And it is on the bottom right corner in MAS Ultra.
If you can't find an article that works, the library does have the book "The Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Book List K-8" at the call number LB1573 .F638 2006. Perhaps it would list a book that you could use.
