Q. I'm a librarian at the U of ND, looking for information on the student library fee at UNO.
Dear Sir or Madam,
Julie Anderson, the Acting Director at the University of North Dakota's Chester Fritz Library, asked me to do some research on student fees assessed to support research libraries on university campuses. She is planning to submit a proposal for such a fee at our institution, and would like to learn from the experience of other libraries. Some Google searches suggested that your institution uses such a student fee. May I pick your brains about the fee structure at your library?
I have some specific questions:
1) How long have you used a student fee for library services?
2) Is the student fee the primary source of funding for the library? What other sources of funding do you draw on, in general?
3) How much is your student fee? Is it a flat fee, or does it change according to some formula?
4) Do you share the fee with any other campus entities, such as IT or similar? If so, what portion of the fee goes to the library?
5) What does the fee pay for? Are there any restrictions on how it may be spent?
6) How often is the fee amount revisited? Is it tied to inflation, or to tuition rates in some way?
7) How do the students feel about the library fee?
8) How do the school's administrators feel about the library fee?
9) How well would you say the fee works in accomplishing its purposes?
Ms. Anderson indicated to me that she plans to submit the proposal this coming Friday (Jan 30th). I apologize for the short notice, and I hope you can find the time to help us out.
